Cultural Tourism Interpretation (TOU230)

Description Interpretation and representation through different 'voices' is a focus of this study. The concepts of authenticity and construction of place in tourism are examined. Heritage, history and tradition, religion, the arts (music, dance, festivals, sculpture, painting, handicrafts, and gastronomy), special events, and museum activities as well as cross cultural situations are included in the discussion of cultural tourism.
Unit Learning Outcomes On successful completion of the unit you should be able to:
1. Analyse cultural tourism products from the perspectives of both host communities and tourists.
2. Reflect an understanding of tangible and intangible cultural heritage.
3. Provide a discussion of the effects of different voices and different histories in cultural tourism interpretation.
4. Describe the use of interpretation in developing tourist connection to 'place'.

Internet Access RequirementsMurdoch units normally include an online component comprising materials, discussions, lecture recordings and assessment activities. All students, regardless of their location or mode of study, need to have access to and be able to use computing devices with browsing capability and a connection to the Internet via Broadband (Cable, ADSL or Mobile) or Wireless. The Internet connection should be readily available and allow large amounts of data to be streamed or downloaded (approximately 100MB per lecture recording). Students also need to be able to enter into online discussions and submit assignments online.
