Learning outcomes

1.
Demonstrate an understanding of animal science in the following key areas: structure and function of the key production animal industries
2.
Detailed knowledge of mammalian biology as it relates to food and fibre production. This includes knowledge of: i) Cellular structure and biochemistry; ii) Mammalian physiology and anatomy; iii) Production animal nutrition
3.
Broad knowledge of the diseases that affect production animals
4.
Broad knowledge of environmental, ethical, economic and cultural issues challenging the production animal industries and its sustainability
5.
Detailed knowledge of a systems approach to animal production
6.
Demonstrate knowledge of the principles and concepts of Animal Science to address issues at a local, national, and international level
7.
Capacity to undertake whole of business analysis of a farming enterprise
8.
Specific animal handling skills relevant to the key production animal species
9.
Formulating hypotheses, proposals and predictions and designing and undertaking experiments in a safe, ethical and responsible manner
10.
Applying recognised methods and appropriate practical techniques and tools, and being able to adapt these techniques when necessary
11.
Synthesising and evaluating information from a range of sources, including traditional and emerging information technologies and methods
12.
Communicate scientific information and research outcomes in both written and oral forms
13.
Attaining practical industry experience and skills in a production animal industry setting through industry placements
14.
A demonstrated understanding of the ethics associated with production animal research
15.
Apply knowledge of the principles and concepts of Animal Science to address issues at a local, national, and international level, and across multiple production animal industries (ie pork, beef, lamb/wool etc)
16.
Apply knowledge of the principles and concepts of Animal Science to work in an interdisciplinary team to solve issues at a local, national, and international level
