Biomedical Science provides students with an opportunity to focus their training and experience in human and medical biology, applying the principles of cellular and molecular biology to the understanding of normal function and disease. The major integrates biomedical science themes at the molecular, cellular and whole-body level and addresses the remarkable advances being made by modern biomedical research. Knowledge from the fundamental disciplines of anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, histology and cell biology is integrated with, and applied to, knowledge in the paraclinical disciplines of pathology, microbiology/parasitology, immunology, pharmacology and molecular genetics, with the option of electives such as haematology. Teaching of these fundamental subjects is carried out in a systematic way with theoretical instruction backed up with extensive practical laboratory training. The major is excellent preparation for a career in medical research and
related areas, or entry into a graduate medical degree.
