The Master of Teaching (Primary) is 1.5 years full-time equivalent (or 2.5 years part-time) initial teaching qualification for graduates who hold a Bachelor's degree in a non-Education field relevant to primary teaching. Students are supported in becoming effective educators with a strong grounding in learning, teaching and curriculum. Professional Experience is a key component of the degree, and internship arrangements with selected partner schools provide students with opportunities to engage with schools and the broader community throughout their course. The Master of Teaching enables graduates to develop the understandings and capacities to be teacher/researchers, agents for change, and socially just practitioners. The degree provides a foundation for further professional development and scholarship.

Learning outcomes

Demonstrate an advanced understanding of the core concepts, subject matter and structures of the content of each learning area that they will teach, and of the appropriate teaching strategies for each learning area

Demonstrate an advanced understanding of the physical and intellectual development and characteristics of students, and how these may affect learning

Demonstrate an advanced understanding of the diverse linguistic, cultural, religious and socioeconomic backgrounds of students in Australian school settings, and how these may affect learning

Understand strategies for teaching Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students that take account of such students' culture, cultural identity and linguistic backgrounds, and promote reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians

Understand strategies for working effectively, sensitively and confidentially with parents/carers, and describe ways to involve parents and carers in their children's education

Understand research principles applicable to the field of education

Identify teaching strategies that will meet the specific learning needs of students across the full range of abilities

Plan for and implement effective teaching and learning, and establish challenging learning goals that are appropriate for students of varying abilities and characteristics

Plan, structure and sequence learning programs based on knowledge of student learning, curriculum content, and effective teaching and assessment strategies

Adopt an inclusive, ethical and non-discriminatory approach to interacting with others from differing backgrounds, and exhibit social and emotional competence in interactions with others and when encountering challenges

Demonstrate mastery of theoretical knowledge and apply it to practice

Demonstrate the cognitive, technical and creative skills necessary to investigate and analyse complex information

Use appropriate strategies and resources to support student motivation, participation and engagement in learning
