The unit provides a platform to explore topics that are intimately related to Years 7-10 mathematics curriculum, using university-level mathematical tools. Topics include Measurement of areas and volumes of geometric objects, Trigonometry, Probability and Data Analysis.

The main goal is for you to develop an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the mathematics which are intimately related to Years 7-10 as spelt out in the SCSA mathematics curriculum. The knowledge and understanding would enable you to develop skills that are crucial for effective teaching, including:

Constructing mathematical explanations and arguments
Examining definitions of common mathematical terms, interpreting terminology and notation
Expanding the range of representation of mathematical ideas by drawing helpful diagrams, developing familiarity of the close relationship between algebra and numbers
Studying statements of theorems and developing some skills and knowledge of proving some of them
Examining typical secondary school mathematical problems, students’ errors and misconceptions
