Unit content:

Key topics in this unit include: the impact of history and colonisation on contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples; the importance of culture, values and social practices, and their influence on health outcomes; culturally appropriate, safe and sensitive communication that facilitates trust and the building of
respectful relationships; knowledge of best practice in clinical presentation and disease prevention for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander; demographic and health statistics, as well as features of effective policies and strategies relative to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the context of health care; the influence of one’s own cultural identity and the culture of the Australian health care system on
perceptions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples; advocacy for equitable outcomes and social justice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples; and leadership in advocating for equitable health outcomes and culturally safe services.
