The unit examines the soundtrack from a number of perspectives: its historical development on the conversion from silent to sound films; the use of both popular and specifically composed music; the various uses and functions of voiceover and narration; non-fiction films; animated films; any any other aspect of the soundtrack . It applies a range of theoretical tools to analyse the components and effects of the soundtrack taking various semiotic models as well as film sound-specific theory from sound theorists and practitioners' own writing on the subject.
