Learning outcomes

1.

Apply knowledge of the cognitive, social and emotional development and characteristics of students relevant to your teaching area, to plan, deliver and evaluate lessons to facilitate student learning

2.

Synthesize knowledge of Behaviourist, Constructivist, Social-Cognitive and Humanist views of related to motivation and engagement to recommend specific strategies for teaching students of diverse backgrounds.  

3.

Using the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers, analyse effective engagement with professional learning, ethical, legislative, administrative and organisational requirements of the teaching profession. 

4.

Critically evaluate research on how students learn to develop and justify your own philosophy of teaching in connection with the key theories.

Unit content:

This unit will introduce students to the profession of teaching and will have a focus on topics such as child development, theories of learning, motivation and engagement, sociocultural factors in learning, classroom management, inclusivity and diversity, the role of schooling, curriculum in the Australian context, communication, and ethics in the profession.  

Other notes:

During this unit students will apply for their mandatory criminal history checks and clearances - WWC and NCCHC -  in preparation for later placement units in the course..
