Recognise the role of applied science principles in evidence-based nursing practice.                                        

2.

Demonstrate an introductory understanding of microorganisms for infection prevention and control in nursing practice.

3.

Explain the role of measurement and diagnostic testing in relation to human anatomy and physiology, and its relevance to health care and clinical nursing practice. 

4.

Explain the physiology and types of pain.

5.

Perform a range of observations to collect objective patient physiological data and recognise normal values

6.

Demonstrate competence in a range of basic medication calculations.

Unit content:

Overview of Organ Systems: Anatomical Orientation, Chemistry and Biochemistry, cell structure, cell division and regulation

Homeostasis

Infection Control: microorganisms, hand hygiene, chain of infection, nosocomial infection, isolation, personal protective equipment,

Immune system: fever, inflammation

Cardiovascular pressures: heart rate, blood pressure, blood flow

Respiration and oxygenation: oxygen saturation, oxygen delivery (nasal prongs, Hudson Mask), airways  

Skin functions: heat loss and gain, peripheral circulation, neurovascular observations, pressure areas, positioning and support

Fluids and Hydration: fluid balance

Elimination: urinalysis, bowels, bristol stool chart

Nutrition: food groups, height, weight, blood glucose level, ATP, 

Nervous System: Peripheral Nervous System, Central Nervous System, Pain, pain assessment

Medication Calculations: Ratio/Conversion

Assessment Two is a Hurdle Assessment -students must demonstrate competence by passing this assessment to pass the unit.
