Learning outcomes

Apply knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology to the care of patients with acute alterations to their health and wellbeing

Demonstrate the quality use of medicines through an understanding of pharmacological management of acute alterations to health and wellbeing

Discuss the implications of acute alterations to health and wellbeing across the lifespan, considering the unique and diverse experiences of patients, families and carers.

Introduction to pharmacology - Pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics. Quality use of medicine (TGA, NSQHS, medication errors, adverse effects, Patient adherence, Health literacy)

Medication Calculations – Injections/IV Infusions 

Pathophysiology: Pain and mechanisms of pain, Pharmacology: Analgesia and Anti-inflammatory Drugs

Pathophysiology: Acute alteration of neurological function (Epilepsy/Stroke/Spinal Cord Injury),  Pharmacology: Seizures and Anticonvulsants

Pathophysiology: Acute alteration to musculoskeletal function (fractures/trauma complications/compartment syndrome/crush injury), Pharmacology: Blood Clotting and Anticoagulants

Pathophysiology: Acute alteration to cardiac function (Myocardial Infarction/angina/cardiac arrest), Pharmacology: Hypertension and Anti-hypertensives, Vasodilators

Pathophysiology: Acute alteration to respiratory function (Upper Respiratory Tract Infections/Pneumonia/Asthma/Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome), Pharmacology: Infections and Antibiotics Bronchodilators.
