Enrolment rules
PEC594/PEN594 Energy Management or equivalent, plus enrolment in Master of Renewable and Sustainable Energy/Master of Renewable Energy. Students need a strong science (particularly physics and ideally chemistry) and maths background (to at least 100 level). Students should be familiar with introductory statistics, including regression analysis.

Learning outcomes
1.
Conduct an energy survey and audit and evaluate the energy efficiency of industrial energy systems.
2.
Use the process integration method to estimate the minimum energy use targets of heat exchange networks.
3.
Make design calculations for fundamental heat transfer processes.
4.
Design and optimize fundamental refrigeration, heat pump, and power systems.
5.
Design humidifying and dehumidifying processes of moist air in thermal processes.

Unit content:Energy survey techniques and auditing, mass and energy balances, thermodynamics, exergy analysis, air psychrometrics, heat transfer, introductory process integration (pinch technology).
Other notes:This unit is taught externally/online by staff from Massey University with tutorial support from Murdoch staff. It is only offered every second year.
