Learning outcomes

A knowledge base of the theological, historical, philosophical and pedagogical factors affecting the teaching of religion in the school classroom.
2.
A critical awareness of current policy and praxis as to the teaching of religion in schools.
3.
The ability to express opinions, be that in written or oral form, by means that are well expressed, cogent and coherent.

Unit content:The broad aims of this unit are to: 1. Recognise and stimulate critical awareness of the role of religion and religious education in society. 2. Critically engage students so as to further their understanding of the issues involved in teaching religion in the classroom in the Australian context. 3. By exposing students to the teaching of religious themes in schools require them to think critically and creatively as to religious education curriculum and teaching. To achieve such aims the following topics will be addressed in lectures, tutorials and in essays: Context of Religion in Australian Society Context of Religious Education in Australian Schools Teaching Religious Education in the Classroom Religious Education in State Schools Religious Education in Religious Schools Non-school forms of Religious Education
