Learning outcomes

Demonstrate understanding of the relationship between the various levels of legislation, case law and policy in order to interpret and apply migration law in professional practice.

Demonstrate research abilities to assess current and relevant information from a range of sources to develop and deliver migration advice.

Demonstrate knowledge of relevant legislation to provide advice on procedures for valid visa applications.

Analyse and discuss the role and regulation of migration agents.

Formulate and implement communication strategies orientated to key stakeholders including clients.

Unit content:Topics covered will include an overview and history of Australia’s migration programme; migration legislation and policy; the establishment and regulation of the migration agent profession; research skills to ensure current and reliable advice; statutory interpretation including the Migration Act 1958, the Migration Regulations 1994, the Migration Agents Regulations 1998 and other relevant legislation; valid visa application requirements; ethical framework for working with clients and the relevance of case law in migration practice. Applied ethics and the Code of Conduct relevant to the topics are also included.
