Critically discuss the metabolic characteristics of CMD, giving concrete examples drawn from epidemiological studies on obesity and diabetes.

Have a broad overview of systems medicine applications in the influence of genetic and environmental risk factors on CMD.

Evaluate and describe the role of the microbiome in cardiovascular diseases

Design an oral presentation to conceptually map the impact of cardiometabolic diseases.

Unit content:

This unit aims to give a broad overview of examples of systems medicine approaches to addressing health
challenges that have origins in cardiometabolic health. The following topics will be addressed:
• Overview of systems medicine in cardiometabolic health
• The influence of gut microbiomes on cardiometabolic health Impact of obesity and bariatric surgery
on gut microbiome and cardiometabolic health
• Genome and metabolome wide association studies involving cardiovascular diseases of
cardiometabolic diseases
• The role of nutrition and exercise in the prevention of cardiometabolic diseases
