Develop a broad knowledge on the benefits and limitations of applying various omics technologies in neuropathological disease
Demonstrate how these systems medicine approaches have led to the development of new therapeutics.
Conceptually map the direct and indirect chemical communication between the gut and the brain
Critically discuss the impact of the microbiome on mood and anxiety disorders.
Extrapolate how a new therapeutic is being used to combat neuromuscular diseases.
Critically evaluate the genetic and environmental contributions to Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases.

Additional information
This unit aims to give a broad overview of genetic and environmental contributions to neuropathologies and to provide examples of new therapeutic avenues being pursued within a systems medicine context. The following topics will be addressed:
• Overview of neurodegeneration and approaches used to understand the mechanisms behind the pathology of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Diseases.
• Gut-brain communication via the nervous system, immune system and direct chemical signalling.
• Complex gene-environment interactions in neuropathology.
• The impact of the microbiome in anxiety, depression and mood disorders New therapeutic strategies to tackle neuromuscular diseases
