Unit content:

This unit is structured so that students are introduced to concepts related to Laboratory Medicine in an ordered manner. The unit initially introduces medical terminology and provides a broad background of the profession and clinical diagnostic testing. This is followed by a series of lectures from experts from the major clinical disciplines of Laboratory Medicine, including guest lecturers from external diagnostic pathology laboratories. These lectures are underpinned by a visit and tour of a diagnostic pathology laboratory, and the development of practical skills focused on general (pipetting, dilutions) and specific (microscopy, spectrophotometry) competency development.
