Learning outcomes
1.
Describe and critically analyse key issues and approaches in numeracy instruction for students with learning difficulties and disabilities.
2.
Determine and utilise appropriate diagnostic tools to identify the common learning difficulties experienced by children in developing mathematical concepts and skills and understand mathematical learning difficulties experienced by individual children.
3.
Develop detailed lesson plans for student with learning difficulties and mild disabilities involving adaptation of mainstream curricula and based on effective use of diagnostic instruments
4.
Develop individual education programs in core skills and understandings in number sense, measurement, calculation and problem solving for students with a range of disabilities
5.
Construct and/or select learning experiences as appropriate for student’s instructional needs
6.
Facilitate students’ understanding and use of the language of mathematics in carrying out their mathematical activities

Additional information
Unit content:Content will include the following:
- Adaptation of mathematics curricula (with a focus on number sense, calculation and measurement skills and problem solving) to meet the needs of students with learning difficulties.
- Program development for students with learning difficulties and mild disabilities whose needs are met by appropriate adaptation of mainstream mathematics curricula.
- Diagnostic assessment and implementation of the adapted programs with a focus on effective teaching strategies.
- Examination of current research, reforms and debates in numeracy instruction in terms of meeting the needs of students with learning difficulties and disabilities.
- Role of language in numeracy instruction and the effect that this role has on learning for students with learning difficulties and disabilities
