Unit content:
Topics will include:
- Introduction to nature-based approaches: Overview of methodologies, principles and benefits.
- Forest Schools: Principles and role in fostering ecological literacy and holistic development.
- Bush Schools: Philosophy and practices. Outdoor learning, wilderness survival and Indigenous knowledge systems.
- Botanical literacies: Plants, their ecological role within sustainable solutions, for instance in relation to urban gardening, ethnobotany, and ecological restoration.
- Slow pedagogies: Contemplative and mindful approaches to education, emphasising nature, deep engagement, and sense of ecological citizenship.
- Nature-based learning environments: Designing and creating spaces that promote experiential learning, connection to nature, and ecological sustainability.
- Community engagement and partnerships: Sociocultural methodologies and ways to engage with local communities, including First Nations peoples, to implement nature-based pedagogies.
- Ecopsychology and wellbeing: Relationships between nature and mental health, and theories and practices.
- Sustainable practices to manage environmental impact: Critiquing practices and identifying impact on wellbeing of the local and global environment.
- Evaluating and assessing nature-based programs: Evaluating the effectiveness and impact of nature-based programs, using monitoring and evaluation tools.
