Unit content:

The first part of the unit acquaints students with the differences between sovereign-level administration and our emergent global governance arena. This includes comparing and contrasting sovereign-level legislative, executive, and judicial arenas with emergent orders at the global level. Interspersed in our conversation will be international civil servant roles and the representatives, accountability, legitimacy, and transparency of this emergent order. The second part of the unit looks at sector-specific issues include climate change refugees, the human right to water, financial crisis responsiveness, and sovereign wealth funds. The final part of the unit examines emergent perspectives from China, India, and Brazil on what is or should be global governance and its interaction with sovereign-level administration. Particular attention is paid to the values that are espoused, whether such values counter or complement our current international order, and what type of global governance system might be our future.
