Unit content:The unit covers topics such as sustainable development and tourism, destination planning and development, and community stakeholder engagement in tourism. In particular, it focuses on the various forms of tourism suitable at the local community level. For example, agri-tourism, eco-tourism, rural tourism, gastronomic tourism and indigenous tourism, etc. The emphasis is on the exploration of sustainable tourism and destination management theory, concepts and strategies, as they are applied towards community-based tourism at the destination. The focus is on blending different disciplinary approaches towards a more comprehensive understanding of contemporary sustainable tourism and destination management that fulfils the ethical philosophies and triple bottom-line outcomes of social, environmental and economic sustainability.
Other notes:The unit is run on a New Colombo Plan Grant (NCP) and there are 5 places funded. The funded places will be awarded based on the NCP criteria; All eligible students may apply, where they are prepared to pay for costs of the field-trip (self-funded or International funding opportunities), up to a total 10 will be accepted, due to logistical limitations of the overseas tour.
