Unit content:Speaking, listening, reading and writing simple conversations with Japanese-speaking people, covering a range of topics such as themselves, family and friends, university life and study, and daily activities. Students will learn in Romanised Japanese initially, but rapidly master how to read and write the two syllabic scripts (hiragana and katakana) and a small number of commonly-used kanji (Chinese characters).
Other notes:Advanced students including those who have WACE qualification in Japanese as Second Language or equivalent should consult with the Academic Chair of Asian Studies to determine level of entry.
This is a University-Wide Breadth Unit. If this unit is taken as a Core or Specified Elective unit in a student’s major or minor, it cannot also be used to satisfy the University-Wide Breadth Unit requirement. If taken as a University-Wide Breadth Unit, this unit will contribute to satisfying that Part II requirement of the Bachelor degree, however its credit points will be counted as Part I points; students should note that no more than 30 credit points at Part I may be credited towards course completion requirements.
