Learning outcomes

Understand the basics, structure and operation of overcurrent, distance and differential protections for lines and feeders, transformers, generators and motors.

Unit content:• Review of power flow – models for lines, loads and generators • Angle Stability – generator dynamic models, equal area criterion; transient response to fault events • Frequency stability and control – droop controllers • Voltage stability – stability margins; PV and QV curves; voltage collapse • Protection – review of fault calculations; instrumentation transformers; over-current relays; relay coordination; directional relays; distance relays
