Unit content:The unit begins by looking at the role of renewable energy in development, and the need for sustainable development in developing countries. It then looks at traditional and conventional energy sources used in rural communities of developing countries. Following this it looks at the community development project that comprises of several renewable energy technologies that are suitable for these rural communities. This is followed by rural electrification projects using solar, wind and water technologies. It then discusses case studies on cooking and sustainable transport used in rural areas of developing countries. The non-technical aspects of successful implementation of sustainable energy solutions, including technical selection, technical transfer, market needs and evaluation, project finance and planning are then discussed to establish an understanding of sustainable project development.
