Unit content:This unit examines coastal and marine management issues, policies and practices by focussing on the diverse habitats represented along the Australian coastline. These include sandy beaches, estuaries, mangroves, seagrass beds, salt marshes, coral reefs, rocky shores and islands. Other lectures cover marine conservation, management of fisheries, ports and the offshore oil & gas industry as well as case studies. Emphasis is placed on the use of spatial data and Geographical Information System (GIS) technology and includes a suite of computer-based sessions using GIS as a tool to investigate various coastal management scenarios.
