Additional information

Unit content:

Students will gain an understanding of the expression of uncertainty in measurement through presentations and discussions in weekly sessions covering the following topics: · The importance of uncertainty in science and technology, measurement fundamentals and terms used in measurement · Uncertainty in measurement · Statistical concepts · Systematic errors · Calculation of uncertainties- Measurand model and propagation of uncertainties · Probability density and the Gaussian distribution · The central limit theorem · Sampling a Gaussian distribution · The t-distribution and the Welch- Satterthwaite formula The review and reporting on selected case studies will provide students with a variety of engineering related measurement examples, and how uncertainty analyses are performed by applying the methods of the ISO Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement. Furthermore spread sheet exercises during weekly classes provide students with the skills to perform uncertainty analyses.
