VET586 is an integral part of the veterinary course. Students are provided with the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in clinical practice and obtain the skills needed to meet 'day one' competencies required for registration as a veterinarian and by accrediting bodies. Each of the rotations within this unit can be considered a stand-alone discipline in which a veterinarian in clinical practice must be competent to practice safely, effectively and within the laws that govern veterinary practice in Australia and where this degree is recognised. The content of the Murdoch University veterinary course has to satisfy the Veterinary Surgeons' Boards of all States in Australia, New Zealand, the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons UK and the American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education. It is a requirement that all students are competent in all core areas at graduation. Within each of the rotations in of Small Animal Practice 2: Anaesthesia · Dentistry · Dermatology · Emergency and Critical Care · Small Animal Surgery, the following same 5 categories of learning objectives will be applied and assessed - Objectives: History taking and reporting (ULOs 2 & 4 & 5) · Effective time management obtaining history · Accuracy of history · Articulate & concisely recorded · One written history will be randomly selected from each week of the rotation to be graded; Communication skills (ULOs 2, 5 & 6) · Ability to communicate and create rapport with clients · Ability to communicate and work effectively with both rotation team members, nursing staff and clinicians; Practical Skills (ULO 1) · Diagnostic procedures · Surgical procedures · Animal handling · Physical exam skills; Problem solving (ULOs 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5) · Application of knowledge to clinical case · Use of problem solving oriented medical approach · Ability to formulate differential lists · Ability to formulate diagnostic plans · Ability to formulate treatment plans; Professionalism (ULOs 5 &6) · Team work · Punctuality · Ethical and professional behaviour · Dress/appearance
Successful completion of SAP 1 and SAP 2 is a prerequisite for graduation with a BVMS degree.
