Learning outcomes

1.

The diversity of marine photosynthetic organisms

2.

The physiology of marine photosynthetic organisms and how they respond to their environment

3.

What the likely human impacts on the marine environment are and particularly how photosynthetic organisms in the marine environment are likely to respond to these changes. This unit will contribute to the development of the following Graduate Attributes.

4.

Competence in the laboratory, including skills of observation, interpretation, drawing, plant dissection and microscope use.

5.

Social interaction in the laboratory using shared resources and working together to solve problems.

6.

Independent study techniques.

7.

An awareness of the global diversity of algae and plants and their adaptation to their environment.

Additional information

Unit content:

The unit is divided into three conceptual blocks: 1. Cell biology and physiological processes; 2. Diversity, morphology and evolution of microalgae, macroalgae and marine angiosperms; 3. Environmental factors affecting growth and functioning of marine algae and plants, including human impacts. These topics will be presented in blocks of lectures throughout the semester, and supported/illustrated in laboratory classes presented each week.
