Develop an understanding of the nature and characteristics of students with high-incidence disabilities, including students with mild intellectual disabilities, learning disabilities, attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorders, ASD, and students with emotional or behavioural disorder.
Investigate specific strategies and interventions for teaching students with each of these disabilities including managing inappropriate behaviour, both academic and social.
Develop understanding of critical issues, laws, policies, and ethical principles regarding education of students with special educational needs.
Communicate research-based strategies for individual curriculum-based assessment, planning, and instruction.
Conduct independent research into a current topic/issue relevant to learners with learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities, ADHD, autism, or emotional disabilities.

Content to be covered:
1. Introduction to High-Incidence Disabilities including Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), mild intellectual disabilities, learning disabilities, attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorders (ADHD), and emotional or behavioural disorders. Terminology, classification, prevalence and common misconceptions.
2. Causes, symptoms and common impairments of individuals with high-incidence disabilities.
3. Communication impairments, augmentative programs and devices: PECS, Makaton, iPad Apps.
4. Addressing social and sensory impairments. Assessing and teaching social and play skills, and learning to manage feelings and emotions. Social interaction patterns, ritualised, stereotyped, repetitive behaviours.
5. Assessment of students with high-incidence disabilities. Screening and assessment instruments, diagnostic processes and, what next.
6. Positive Behaviour Intervention and Supports (PBIS). Universal interventions.
7. Teaching children with high-incidence disabilities. Evidence-based educational practices.
8. The inclusion of students with high-incidence disabilities like Autism Spectrum Disorders in regular education.
9. Working with the families of people with high-incidence disabilities. Resilience in families, siblings and grandparents.
