Unit content:

This unit has two major themes; Aquaculture production systems and Principles of sustainable aquaculture. 1) Aquaculture production. This topic examines the main types of aquaculture production systems. It considers the range of aquatic organisms that are cultured, how they are cultured and why they cultured. It covers aquaculture for food, biofuels, cultural products and the aquarium trade. 2) Sustainable aquaculture This topic explores approaches to sustainable aquaculture. It investigates the pros and cons of aquaculture versus wild production, assesses the positive and negative impacts of aquaculture on the environment and considers how new technologies can be used to address some of the negative impacts. It covers biosecurity, interactions with wild fisheries, sourcing feed, fish health and handling, pollution, and habitat degradation. To complement lectures and workshops on these two themes, students will develop detailed case studies of specific aquaculture industries. These case studies document the history and current status of the industry, discuss the factors that are promoting and constraining the industry and assess the future potential of the industry. Student are tasked to find innovation solutions to some of the challenges faced by the industry.
