Unit content:The unit will cover the following topics (with representative concepts in each topic shown in parentheses):
· Water quality standards and treatment objectives governing water treatment plant design
· Gravitational settlers and settling basins (Stokes Law, discrete and flocculant settling, critical velocity, particle size distributions, sludge removal, empirical design constraints)
· Rapid mixing, coagulation and flocculation (diffuse double layer, particle stability, diffuse layer compression, charge neutralization, shear coagulation, Smoluchowski’s equation, energy
dissipation rate)
· Media filtration (eta functions, interception, fluidisation, mono- and multi-media, backwashing, effective filtration rate)
· Disinfection (pathogens, CT, Chick-Watson equation, specific lethality, breakpoint chlorination, disinfection by-products, chloramines, UV disinfection)
· Ion Exchange (electrostatics, strong and weak resins, affinity and selectivity, regeneration, softening, breakthrough)
Precipitation and softening (solubility, Langelier index, nucleation, excess lime softening, recarbonation, carbonate hardness
