The aim of this unit is to examine different agricultural practices in varying host locations and to place them in context with systems used in Western Australia and/or Australia as a whole. Topics covered, but not restricted to, include: 1) livestock production; 2) animal husbandry; 3) intensive and extensive systems; 4) livestock processing 5) food processing and grading systems: meat grading; 6) agricultural innovative technologies. Participants will engage with academics, local students, farmer and agricultural engineers to gain a deep understanding of agricultural practices and food production systems. Knowledge of the host location or country’s geography, food and culture will be obtained through direct learning and engagement, including field visits, and cultural/social activities. These may include language and cooking lessons, visits to key cultural sites and social interactions between the participants and local students (note activities may vary pending the tour offered). Students will prepare and deliver a short oral or poster presentation and/or lead a discussion covering an agricultural or cultural topic, as well as keeping a summary diary of the visits, followed by a final report.
Activities pre- and post- tour are not timetabled. Students will be informed accordingly when these activities occur.
