Learning outcomes

Communicate your understanding of language acquisition theories related to how students learn English and the implications for classroom practice.

Communicate your understanding of the concepts, substance, structure and organisational framework of the Australian English Curriculum

Develop and organise appropriate teaching strategies, resources and assessment judgements related to the teaching of English

4.

Evaluate and design appropriate English learning sequences, lesson plans and assessment strategies that promote student learning and cater for specific needs

5.

Reflect on and recognise the role of the APST and the Murdoch Graduate Attributes in identifying professional learning needs.

Unit content:Topic 1: Understand the literacy expectations of contemporary teachers and students; Topic 2: Understand how to teach reading and writing; Topic 3: Understand how to assess literacy development; Topic 4: Understand how to work with the young literacy learners; Topic 5: Understand how to write school-based curriculum; Topic 6: Understand how to raise phonemic awareness to support literacy; Topic 7: Understand how to further the literacy skills of children who can already read and write; Topic 8: Understand how to cater for children who struggle in reading and writing; Topic 9: Understand how learning to read supports reading to learn; Topic 10: Understand how to draw on grammatical knowledge to provide explicit feedback to support improvement.
