Learning outcomes
1.
An appreciation of the economic importance of biosecurity and ramifications of the International Plant Protection Convention.
2.
Students need to demonstrate an understanding of the characteristics of the orders of insects and other invertebrates that are likely to be of biosecurity concern.
3.
They will be able to demonstrate an ability to recognise and classify insects and other invertebrates that are of major biosecurity concern.
4.
They will demonstrate an ability to manage and deal with invertebrate pest incursions and have a knowledge of international agreements.
5.
They will produce a report outlining a diagnostic protocol on a plant biosecurity risk organism and an advisory tool applicable to a wider audience.

Unit content:The main content is online lecture material available as a series of Adobe Flash presentations on the topics; Invasive invertebrates, (2) Taxonomy, (3) Insects, (4) Herbivory, (5) Pest management, (6) non-insect pest invertebrates, (7 – 9) insect pests by main orders. Students will work their way through the course modules, using these web-based resources. Students are expected to pace their effort appropriately through the semester, keeping in mind the date of the assessment tasks. Online quizzes are available for completion after each module to provide formative feedback.
