Additional information
Unit content:Critical web literacy involves an ‘active’ form of literacy, because on the web we’re not simply spectators but users, participants, sharers and collaborators. In this unit we take a holistic approach to web literacy, sometimes referred to as ‘multiliteracies’ (as it includes both traditional media literacy skills and new ones specific to interactive media).
Following an introductory lecture that provides an overview of the unit content and rationale, this unit is divided into four sections as follows: One: A History of the Web (from Web 1.0 to Web 2.0 and beyond; web terminology; ‘big’ and ‘small’ data). Two: Navigating and Searching (keywords, browsers and search engines; services and platforms; evaluating URLs and domain names; identifying authors and publishers of web resources; assessing usefulness and credibility). Three: Online Content Creation (web design basics; textual and visual communication; cross-platform content; content curation and co-creation; web analytics; web services for user-generated content distribution; creativity, remix, and copyright). Four: Connecting, Collaborating and Sharing (understanding the social web; online games and communities; social media platforms and the commentary revolution; modes and conventions of online communication; open source vs walled gardens; security and privacy).
