Introduction
What will we do in this subject? How do we communicate today? What is mass communication and how has it changed?
Mass Communication Technologies
Students will examine mass communication technologies and begin to form awareness of how mass communication technologies can shape a society.
Mass Communication Text Analysis
Building on the introduction to mass media texts of last week, students will look at how the text has changed since WWII, or indeed, if it has changed? Do the messages in this text construct an audience?
Mass Communication and Representation
This week Introduces the concept of stereotyping and gender in advertising and analyses the connections between media coverage over time. How are women and men represented in mass media outlets? Has
this representation changed through the ages? How is it a reflection of culture?
Constructing an Audience
This week students will build on their knowledge of mass media texts by exploring the difference between broadsheets and tabloids. Students must provide the same news item from a broadsheet and a tabloid
and analyse the language to ascertain audience.
The World Wide ‘Tangled’ Web?
This week, students will examine how the Internet has changed society. How does the Internet contribute to mass communication? Is that contribution a positive or negative issue?
Changes to Mass Communication
Mediums and Celebrity
This week students will explore questions such as, How has social media changed mass communication? What impact has social media had on society? How are identities formed in the age of social media? How is this different to the last few decades?
Film Theory
This week, students will look at how theorists use film, as a mass communication medium to shape a society. What are the ways in which theorists ‘show us’ the world? Can film shape an audience?
Visual Language/Film Language and Semiotics
This week students will examine further the visual language of film and scriptwriting. Students will also explore how semiotics shapes a film.
Introduction to Assessment Item 3:
Confirm allocation of production teams and crew roles.
Video Production 1: Pre production and planning
Crews to present pre production planning and crew roles to class. The lecturer will discuss and approve locations with students
Video Production 2: Video Shoots
This week students will go on location to shoot their film for their major project.
Video Production 3: Editing
This week students will edit their film. Students will need to bring their laptop computer with editing software and have their film uploaded for editing.
