Learning outcomes

Conduct a wind resource feasibility study using methods based on measured data as well as using industry-standard software

Demonstrate mastery of theoretical knowledge of the aerodynamic and dynamic loads on wind turbines and use these technical skills to evaluate the design and manufacture of wind turbines

Investigate and analyse different power configurations of wind turbines as well as different methods to control wind turbine operation

Communicate and evaluate professional practice in planning, designing, installing and operating wind farms

5.

Conduct a resource assessment for a potential hydropower installation

Use cognitive, technical and creative skills to size a micro hydro system for a particular resource and load and give recommendations for the type of system required

Unit content:

The section on wind energy in this unit covers the wind resource, aerodynamics and mechanics, power generation, design and manufacture, control and safety and wind farm planning, design, installation and operation. The section on hydro power covers the hydro resource, turbine design, micro hydro system design and integration of hydro systems.
