Learning outcomes

1.

Communicate the diverse physical, social and intellectual characteristics of students in an Australian classroom including the impact of culture, cultural identity and linguistic backgrounds on the education of students from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander background

Recognise the diverse roles and responsibilities of the teacher and the functions of schooling in Australia notwithstanding the implications for teachers

3.

Plan, teach and evaluate lessons using appropriate resources and learning activities especially the importance of establishing a safe and productive learning environment.

Develop your skills as a reflective practitioner with the importance of effective communication with students and colleagues to have an influence on the teacher you are becoming

Unit content:

This unit will introduce students to the profession of teaching and will have a focus on topics such as the role of schooling, curriculum in the Australian context, communication and ethics in the profession, inclusivity and diversity, family, school and community relationships, motivation and learning, management of classrooms, planning for teaching and the challenges and dilemmas of a profession under constant scrutiny
