Explain how students’ mathematical thinking develops over the Primary School years, and apply this to identifying and addressing students’ learning needs and misconceptions.
Identify and plan the Western Australian Curriculum: Mathematics content to be taught in each year level and as the basis for planning sequenced units of work.
Communicate your understanding of appropriate pedagogy for teaching and assessment through the planning and delivery of engaging learning experiences in maths, including assessment of students’ learning.
Engage in short and long-term planning of mathematical content, and analyse plans with regard to sequencing, structure and integration within and across subject areas.

The unit content includes the following key topics:
- Approaches to learning and teaching primary mathematics
- Australian Curriculum: Early numbers, Whole and Decimal Numbers and Place Value Fractions, decimals, percentages and ratios
- The four arithmetic operations; can calculators help or hinder?
- Lesson planning; putting parts together
- Assessment: diagnostic, formative and summative
- Measurement & Geometry 1: 2D & 3D shapes, nets, transformations and locations; using ICT tools including dynamic geometry software in iPads or laptops
- Measurement & Geometry 2: Understand units, direct & indirect measure, estimation
- Programming: Planning a year-long program
- Statistics & Probability 1: Collecting and analysing data; representation, interpretation and communication; use of ICT tools?
- Statistics & Probability 2: Introduction to Chance; language and simple measures
