Learning outcomes

1.

Discuss developments in cosmopolitan literary forms and related theories in literature from the late twentieth century into the twenty-first century.

2.

Demonstrate well developed skills in reading, academic and creative writing, and analysis of a range of texts.

3.

Trace the evolution of the novel in the period studied with reference to relevant literary theory and criticism.

4.

Have some grasp of the social and political contexts of the periods and their impact on the changing face of the cosmopolitan novel

5.

Read, comment on and write (in critical and/or creative ways) about the selected texts, using the language and conceptual tools of critical analysis, and/or the narrative techniques and styles of creative writing .

6.

Discuss the cultural role and historical relevance of the book in contemporary global culture.

Unit content:

Students will engage with a number of primary and secondary texts, which will be supported by analysis and discussion in tutorials coupled with digital tools and group exercises.
