Enrolment rules
Enrolment in BSc (Veterinary Biology)/DVM (B1330); successful completion of all BSc (Veterinary Biology)/DVM Part I units, or accepted equivalents and/or concurrent enrolment in ANS101.
Students enrolled in the BSc Animal Science/Animal Health major are eligible to enrol, subject to quota restrictions, a strong academic record in the relevant Part I units, and approval of both the Unit Coordinator and the Animal Science/Animal Health Academic Chair.

Learning outcomes
1.
Anatomy and physiology of the male and female reproductive systems and mammary glands. To be able to identify and describe the normal anatomy, histology and physiology of the male and female reproductive systems, placenta and mammary glands, and explain the roles and interactions of the hormones that regulate their function
2.
Normal growth and development. Be able to explain the principles of reproduction, growth and development of domestic species from conception to maturity, including the fetal and maternal cascade that initiates the onset of parturition
3.
Abnormal growth and development. Be able to describe the common congenital malformations that result from abnormal growth and development
4.
Anatomy and histology of integument and glands. Be able to identify and describe the anatomy and histology of the integument and main endocrine glands within the body, and describe the development of the haemopoietic and immune systems.
5.
Hormonal regulation of body systems and homeostasis. For each of the following, be able to list the main hormones released, explain how their release is regulated, list the main target organs, explain the mechanism of hormonal action at the target organs, and how this affects overall homeostasis of the body: pituitary gland, thyroid glands, parathyroid glands, adrenal glands and pineal gland.

Oral and written communication of scientific information. Research and present information both orally and in writing to colleagues at the appropriate level.
7.
Teamwork. To demonstrate an ability to communicate and work effectively as a team member in laboratories, as well as in the preparation and presentation of a group project.
8.
Professionalism. To demonstrate professionalism through compliance with College of Veterinary Medicine professionalism policies, in particular the ethical and safe use of animals and animal tissues.

Additional information
Unit content:The content in this unit will be presented in 4 blocks. In the first block students will examine the gross and microscopic embryology of domestic animals, from conception to parturition. The second block will cover the anatomy and histology of the integument and main glands within the body, including the development of the haemopoietic and immune systems. In the third block, students will examine in detail the anatomy and histology of the male and female reproductive systems, the placenta and the mammary glands. The fourth block will cover in detail the physiology of the pituitary gland, thyroid glands, parathyroid glands, adrenal glands and pineal gland and how these interact to regulate homeostasis within the body. At a basic level, the consequences of dysfunction, the resulting clinical signs, and the common diagnostic tests used to evaluate organ dysfunction will also be introduced.
