Additional information
The unit begins by looking at the sustainability issues and role of renewable energy social and economic advancement and the need to consider sustainability of projects during planning, construction and operation. Students will have the opportunity to identify, plan and assess the sustainability performance of a technology of their choice suitable for either large scale grid connection or small-scale systems for rural or remote applications. The unit will also look that the role that technology, innovation, social considerations and the Sustainable Development Goals has in the success of projects whilst recognising the need for good governance and the evaluation and monitoring of the performance of the project. This will be supported by recent case studies of rural and urban/peri urban electrification projects based on renewable energy technologies highlighting the lessons learnt through the approaches adopted by these projects. Students will have the opportunity to develop a range of skills in non-technical aspects which underpin the successful implementation of sustainable energy solutions, including technical selection, technical transfer, market needs and evaluation, project finance and monitoring and evaluation for renewable energy projects, which can also be applied to non-energy infrastructure projects.
On completion, the capstone experience offers students the opportunity to complete the Infrastructure Sustainability Accredited Professional (ISAP) examination and become accredited.
