Learning outcomes

An understanding of the economic and policy environment in which farm production occurs.

Knowledge of all aspects of the value-chain from on farm production and farm economics, patterns of agricultural trade, the major flows of agricultural commodities, and different markets for different products.

An understanding of how value chains are affected by a range of policy settings,

Knowledge of the key considerations in national and international trade, and the role of marketing in increasing overall value and profitability.

An understanding of how to manage the key vulnerabilities and opportunities in the agricultural value chain.

Skills to undertake farm budgeting, interpretation of ABS and trade statistics, and the underlying mechanisms of local and international commodity markets and marketing.

Unit content:The unit will cover:
1. Farm economics, and the costs and returns of running typical farm enterprises.
2. Patterns or agricultural trade, including the major flows of commodities and the different parties involved.
3. The agricultural policy environment, including past and current concerns.
4. Agricultural value chains, and a discussion of marketing and innovation
5. Emerging markets and technologies that may transform agriculture.
