Key topics covered in this unit include:
* The scientific method and its application in forensic investigations
* The principles of qualitative and quantitative analysis as applied towards forensic chemistry
* Illicit drugs and clandestine laboratories
* Explosives and fire debris analysis
* Trace evidence analysis
* Document examination
* The role of forensic chemistry in coronial and criminal investigations (incl. sobriety)
* Chemical evidence collection and preservation
* The role of ‘quality’ in a forensic science laboratory
* Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
* The preparation of statements of fact, expert opinion reports, court statements and the provision of expert testimony in court
