Additional information
Unit content:The content is divided up into three sections as follows:
Section I: Basic biology of plant pathogens:
n Lecture 1A: Introduction to the unit: Plant Biosecurity Pests-Pathogens (15 slides)
n Lecture 1B: Introduction to Plant Pathogens (45 slides)
n Lecture 2: Major pathogens: Fungi and Fungi-like organisms (55 slides)
n Lecture 3: Major pathogens: True Fungi (95 slides)
n Lecture 4: Major pathogens: Bacteria (54 slides)
n Lecture 5: Major pathogens: Viruses (38 slides)
n Lecture 6: Modes of pathogenicity (49 slides)
n Lecture 7: Disease triangle and epidemiology (76 slides)
Section II: Applied plant pathology
n Lecture 8: Symptoms and signs (60 slides)
n Lecture 9: Working with plant pathogens (74 slides)
n Lecture 10: Management and control (86 slides)
Section III: Detailed case studies
n Lecture 11 (66 slides + additional media: videos, posters, talks)
The 11 modules (lectures) are able to be worked through at the student’s own pace (depending on the background of the student). Lectures 1A & B cover more generalised knowledge that will be covered in more detail in the remaining lectures. Lecture 11 gives more detailed case studies of specific pathogens of relevance to plant biosecurity.
Students are reviewed on their knowledge of the content within the modules using quiz questions. The modules are also to be used as a source of information to assist with assignments. Additional information, short movies, posters, presentations and readings are also provided via a USB).
