Additional information

Unit content:

Literacy:
This unit is designed to help students foster their literacy skills to meet the professional standards required by the Australian Curriculum. All Australian teachers are 'responsible for teaching the subject specific literacy of their learning area' and must have 'a clear understanding of the literacy demands an opportunities of their learning area' (ACARA, 2013). Pre-service teachers’ use of language will impact the quality of their students’ learning. The more that pre-service teachers know about language and how it works, the more able they will be to guide their students to use language effectively.
Numeracy:
While there is general agreement that numeracy is to be taught in schools, there is also a broad range of views about what numeracy is and how should it be taught. Both aspects are very much open to discussion and exploration. There is also much to be gleaned from what scholars and researchers have said. The Numeracy part will provide a structured platform for students to develop some knowledge and understanding of aspects of numeracy as a basis for informed teaching practices.
