The ability to make informed decisions is arguably the most fundamental skill that leaders and managers ought to possess; however, Data and Analytics remain largely, exclusive domains of the Analyst. This unit is designed to build a student’s confidence and foundation towards a career in Business Analytics.
This unit starts with an overview of the organisation, the constituent functions/departments, and how each of those entities sets its goals and manages its performance through the use of Data, Metrics, Reporting, and Analytics. Through the use of some well-established theories, frameworks, or concepts, students identify the most suitable metrics for decision-making or problem-solving and learn to calculate them from datasets using Microsoft Excel.
After learning different analysis techniques, students will learn about reporting and storytelling with data using Microsoft Excel and other data visualization tools. Finally, students play the role of Analyst in a substantive, real-world case study and accompanying dataset by repeating the process of (1) defining an organisational challenge, (2) selecting the appropriate data and metrics to solve the problem, (3) analysing the data, and (4) presenting the results.
