Learning outcomes
Communicate knowledge of the functional anatomy, histology, and physiological processes of nerves, cardiovascular system, muscular system, respiratory and renal systems of healthy and diseased domestic animals
Apply this knowledge to solve and manage problems in a clinical setting, including in the context of diagnostic planning, animal management and care, and promoting health
Demonstrate proficiency in identifying anatomical landmarks and introductory clinical assessment, including in the context of diagnosis and animal management and care
Demonstrate basic research skills in retrieving and synthesising evidence in the context of evidence-based practice in relation to diagnosis, case management and promoting health
Demonstrate effective communication in writing and in oral presentations
Demonstrate ability to collaborate effectively as part of a team
Demonstrate professional conduct through compliance with relevant policies and ethical and safe use of animals and animal tissues
Assessments
Additional information
In this unit students will examine in detail the anatomy, histology and physiology of the individual organs and tissues of animals, focusing on the cardiovascular, respiratory and renal systems. The histology and basic physiology of the nerves and the various types of muscle will also be covered, whilst the anatomy of the peripheral nerves, and the musculoskeletal system are presented in VET260. Physiological mechanisms will be considered in terms of both cellular and tissue structure and the physical and chemical processes necessary for the maintenance of health. Some control mechanisms will also be outlined, but will be covered in much greater depth in VET273 (Veterinary Structure and Function III) in Semester 2.
