Learning outcomes

Review and apply knowledge of the economic and policy environment in which farm production occurs.

Review and apply  knowledge of all aspects of the value-chain from on farm production and farm economics, patterns of agricultural trade, the major flows of agricultural commodities, and different markets for different products.

Review and apply knowledge of how value chains are affected by a range of policy settings,

Review and apply knowledge of the key considerations in national and international trade, and the role of marketing in increasing overall value and profitability.

Apply and communicate knowledge of how to manage the key vulnerabilities and opportunities in the agricultural value chain.

Demonstrate proficiency in skills to undertake farm budgeting, interpretation of ABS and trade statistics, and the underlying mechanisms of local and international commodity markets and marketing to solve and manage problems related to agricultural systems

Effectively articulate agricultural science concepts in written report and oral presentation

Unit content:The unit will cover: 1. Farm economics, and the costs and returns of running typical farm enterprises. 2. Patterns or agricultural trade, including the major flows of commodities and the different parties involved. 3. The agricultural policy environment, including past and current concerns. 4. Agricultural value chains, and a discussion of marketing and innovation 5. Emerging markets and technologies that may transform agriculture.
