Learning outcomes

1.

Explain the application of knowledge of animal breeding (genetics), growth, development, behaviour and health in the management of farm animals. (Function).

2.

Integrate information so as to understand the basic mechanistic concepts underlying various applied animal management scenarios. (Integration).

Apply your understanding of the basic mechanisms and uses of various animal management tools to explain the choice and reasons behind their use in animal agriculture. (Application).

4.

Apply independent study skills by researching and critically reviewing information (presented in modules) from peer reviewed literature in relation to the use of various animal management tools usen in animal agriculture, and to communicate that information in the form of individual viva voce examinations. (Research and communication skills).

Unit content:

The unit allows students to choose their own topics of interest from a list of modules or Study Guides. Students can select up to 3 modules from the following: New animal industries; Sheep genetics and breeding; Applied breeding and genetics; Beef breeding management; Equine breeding management; Molecular meat gastronomy; Applied animal reproduction; Applied animal endocrinology; Reproductive endocrinology; and Artificial insemination and embryo transfer.
