Examine early modern theatrical and performative texts from a range of theoretical perspectives, analysing how literary and creative texts are shaped historically..

Evaluate early modern theatrical and performative texts in relation to genre, mode and style.

Employ practice-based and/or theoretical approaches to respond critically and/or creatively to cultural, social and ethical issues in early modern theatrical and performative texts.

Apply appropriate use of techniques for researching, planning and producing evidence-based arguments.

Unit content:

This unit will involve theoretical engagement with texts from the early modern era, including William Shakespeare and his contemporaries. Students will be able to engage with the texts from a creative and/or theoretical perspective. Both approaches will include critically informed examinations of a range of plays, exploring different theoretical perspectives. Students will be expected to read a wide variety of dramatic texts and supplementary materials.
